Cosmetics and Eyelids
The eyelid is a common place for rashes to develop, because of the skin
sensitivity in that area. Most women naturally assume that makeup is
causing their discomfort, which is quite possible. However, it could also
be the nail polish they are wearing.
According to Dr. Rajani Katta, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at
Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, “even just a tiny speck of wet nail
polish can cause a problem.”
Here are some of the other culprits that can cause eyelid dermatitis:
- accidentally touching the eyelid;
- developing an allergy at any time;
- changes in product ingredients without advertising the fact to the
public;
- contact lens solutions and eye drops that fall onto the eye area.
“Eyelid dermatitis can be
extremely difficult to solve because it can be caused by a lot of
different things,” Dr. Katta said. “It’s miserable for patients, usually
very itchy, and sometimes painful” (Source: Lori Williams, Baylor College
of Medicine, Texas Medical Center News, Feb. 15, 2001).
It is comforting to know that eyelid dermatitis is preventable and
treatable — just call your eye care professional.
