87th Anniversary Gala

The Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness, the oldest organization in Illinois devoted to preventing blindness, celebrated its 87th Anniversary at a Gala Dinner and Silent Auction on Tuesday, November 4 at the Hotel Inter-Continental in downtown Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

The prestigious Derrick Vail, M.D. Memorial Award was presented to Richard E. Gieser, M.D., of the Wheaton Eye Clinic.  Other awardees for the evening included Connie Payton, President of the Walter & Connie Payton Foundation, who received the President’s Award for outstanding community service and Cortez Trotter, Executive Director, Office of Emergency Management and Communications received the Vision Award.

A unique educational symposium was held, featuring the representatives of the Departments of Ophthalmology at teaching institutions and medical schools in Chicago. Each Chair presented a fifteen-minute presentation on “State-of-the-Art” research and eye care.

Joel Daly was the emcee for the Gala Dinner and Silent Auction.  Daly has anchored the 4 p.m. EYEWITNESS NEWS for 16 years. In 1989, the Chicago Bar Association honored Daly with its first annual Herman Kogan award for his weekly series, “Law Review.” A certificate of “Meritorious Achievement” was added in 1995.
